River basin
Water for life and livelihoods, River basin management plans, Glossary, Published by the Environment Agency in 2016, defines a river basin as: ‘…the area of land from which all surface run-off and spring water flows through a sequence of streams, lakes and rivers into the sea at a single river mouth, estuary or delta. It comprises one or more individual catchments.’
It defines river basin management planning as: ‘The management and associated planning process that underpins implementation and operation of the Water Framework Directive. It is both an overarching process in terms of existing processes and also defines new sub-processes such as those for hydromorphology. The river basin management plans are plans for river basin management.'
And states: ‘For each river basin district, the Water Framework Directive requires a river basin management plan to be published. These are plans that set out the environmental objectives for all the water bodies within the river basin district and a summary of the programme of measures that will be taken to achieve those objectives. The plans are based upon a detailed analysis of the pressures on the water bodies and an assessment of their impacts. The plans must be reviewed and updated every six years.’
